Bacton Agent Company

About Us

Bacton Agent Company Limited was established in 1998 by a group of seven international energy companies to act as the interface between the gas shippers and system operators at the point that the National Transmission System (NTS) meets the UK-Continent Interconnector at Bacton.

Bacton Agent Company has an agreement with all the NTS shippers wishing to flow gas to or from the Interconnector, which has been designated by National Grid Transco as the Agency Agreement for this exit point. There are now 32 companies (Principals) registered with Bacton Agent Company.

Bacton Agent Company itself is a company limited by guarantee. There are 21 Members who are able to vote on how much BAC spends and in the development of business rules for the Agent to follow. All Principals are eligible to become Members of the company.

Bacton Agent Company has no direct employees and contracts for all its services. There is an agreement with Bacton Agency Services Limited, a subsidiary of Interconnector (UK) Limited, to perform the day-to-day operations, including:

  • Management of the submission and matching of gas flow nominations between NTS shippers and Interconnector (UK), before and during the day;
  • Allocation of the actual gas flow between NTS shippers after the day; and
  • Calculation of shipper entitlements during periods of interruption and curtailment

About the National Transmission System

The National Transmission System is the pipeline system in Great Britain, owned and operated by National Grid Transco, which carries gas at high pressure from the coastal entry terminals to system exit points, i.e. lower pressure distribution networks, large end users (e.g. power stations), interconnectors and storage facilities.

Interconnector pipelineAbout the Interconnector

The 235km Interconnector pipeline provides a bi-directional link between the UK and Continental European energy markets. It can flow 20 billion cubic metres of gas per year from the UK to Europe, enough to supply 13 million homes, and can also supply 8.5 billion cubic metres of gas per year when in UK import mode.

The pipeline is made of 130,000 tonnes of 40” diameter steel, and carries gas at 140 bar – about 50 times the pressure of a car tyre.
